In late 2019, we launched the Cash Barometer in Nigeria with a survey of CVA recipients in Borno State. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, we adapted our approach to explore how CVA recipients, humanitarians, and financial service providers perceived the economic impact of the pandemic. Further quantitative surveys have since followed in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe (BAY states), in addition to in-depth qualitative research into themes including recipients’ concepts of fairness and aid modality preferences.

The Cash Barometer in Nigeria has provided national and international organisations key insights into the experiences of CVA recipients in the BAY states. We work closely with the Cash Working Group (CWG) and the Community Engagement, Accountability and Localisation Working Group to ensure people’s recommendations reach humanitarian decision makers. Donors have also committed to continued support for the Cash Barometer as “an important tool to understand the experience of CVA recipients” in the Common Donor Approach to CVA for Nigeria.
