Overview
The Syrian crisis, now in its thirteenth year, remains the world's largest displacement crisis, with over half of the pre-conflict population of 21 million displaced, both internally and as refugees, mainly in neighbouring countries which host nearly six million. While the political and security situation continued to deteriorate, the escalation of armed conflict in northwest and northeast Syria of have further disrupted people’s access to essential services and triggered more displacement.
The February 2023 earthquakes worsened the humanitarian situation, with 16.7 million people needing assistance by the end of 2023, the highest since the crisis began.
Our work
We have been working in Syria and neighbouring countries hosting Syrian refugees since 2015 to understand the views of affected communities, aid recipients and local actors regarding the humanitarian response.
We launched a project in 2015 with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) to collect feedback from its aid recipients with the objective to meet its commitment to become more responsive to the people it was aiming to serve.
In 2018, we supported the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in their efforts to strengthen accountability to affected people in north-west Syria, by conducting perception surveys with internally displaced people, as well as implementing partners in collaboration with Humanitarian Needs Assessment Programme (HNAP) team.
In 2020, as part of a project funded by the H2H network, we worked with the HNAP again to hear how conflict-affected individuals inside Syria perceive the COVID-19 pandemic and response.
In 2023, we partnered with UNICEF to support localisation, engage communities and improve humanitarian response performance in Northwest Syria through the development of a local, community-led, and sustainable face-to-face, feedback and dialogue process.
